FET A MÀ (HANDMADE). Art Ceramic in Mallorca

Artists: Rafael Amengual, Pere Bennássar, Marlene Bosch, Stephan Ebert, Marta Murgades, Vicenç Ochoa, Ricardo Sacco, Miquel Segura, Guillem Vicens.

CCA Andratx is pleased to present for the first time an exhibition entirely dedicated to ceramics. The ESPAI starts 2018 with an exciting group show which will unfold a selection of the current art trends of this medium in Mallorca.

The simplicity of the exhibition’s title, Fet a Mà (Handmade) stands as a clear statement towards the change of the contemporary perception of this old material. The recent revitalization of ceramics at an international level has blurred the line between art and handicraft, to which this medium has traditionally been related. Just on the basis that clay is the first material to experiment with, for both children and adults, as well as the oldest used by men to physically mould his ideas, the underestimation of ceramics and clay is often linked with its ease of access and functionality. As an ironic counterpoint to the extended mass-production of ceramics for daily use, thehandmade concept sets out the artists' commitment towards this medium, its creative process and art practice.

It is evident today that ceramics has become a key-element within contemporary art; and because of this reason, we are very proud to offer our visitors the opportunity to approach this medium from a contemporary perspective. The works by the nine participating artists will unfold ceramics’ inherent tactility, while challenging its physical boundaries. Displayed in the show, the viewer will find murals, installation and sculptures, making tangible the wide range of ceramics’ technical possibilities whereas pushing and overcoming the traditional limits of its language.
